Is it possible to love your job too much? Neil Kalawsky, president and general manager at Kalawsky Pontiac Buick GMC, doesn't think so. He has worked at least six days a week as a General Motors dealer for nearly 30 years. He bought his first dealership in Killam, Alberta back in 1978 before purchasing his current dealership in Castlegar, British Columbia in 1989. He is just as excited about the car business today as he was when he joined the industry as a dealer accountant in 1965. "I can't imagine doing anything else," he says. "I love it." To Neil, buying a new car is a special experience. And for everyone at Kalawsky Pontiac Buick GMC, the excitement of customers when picking up a new car or truck is infectious. "It never gets boring," Neil says.
There is plenty more to get excited about. It is a time of renewal at both GM and at Kalawsky Pontiac. GM continues to roll out a large slate of exciting new vehicles from the completely redesigned GMC Sierra to the Buick Enclave. At Kalawsky, we've made several important additions to our management team, we recently launched this online showroom and we've upgraded our computer system to help us maintain and improve our customer service. There are many other changes to come at this family-owned and operated dealership. Neil's wife, Darlene, and sons Craig and Keith are all actively involved in the car business.
Aside from managing the dealership, Neil belongs to the board of The Motor Dealer Council in B.C., which regulates more than 1,700 dealers and 8,000 sales professionals to ensure that consumers are treated fairly and ethically. And Neil recently joined the board of the Canadian Automobile Dealers Association. The dealership is deeply involved in the local community, including Communities in Bloom, the Castlegar & District Library, Selkirk College, Rotary and many other important local initiatives.
